How much does a fractional CFO cost?

There is no useful single price for fractional CFO work. The commercial model depends on the problem, required time, decision-making responsibility and the amount of hands-on work needed.

Start with the shape of the work

A short project such as building a funding model is priced differently from recurring CFO leadership. A temporary finance-team gap, a transaction or a turnaround can also need a higher weekly commitment for a defined period.

Ask what is included

Compare the hours, deliverables, meeting cadence and level of operational work behind each proposal. Clarify whether the provider will do the analysis themselves, lead your team or bring in additional specialists.

Use a short initial scope when the problem is unclear

If the business does not yet know the root finance problem, a diagnostic or first-month scope can be more useful than agreeing a broad retainer. It creates a shared view of priorities before committing to a longer engagement.

Review the arrangement as the company changes

The required time can change quickly after a fundraise, a senior hire or a systems change. Agree in advance how scope and cost will be reviewed rather than treating the first arrangement as permanent.
